Week after week, month after month, I’d attend the local classroom studio where I went to draw the figure each week. During the model breaks that I used to refresh my eyes, I’d walk around the studio. Pulling at my kneaded eraser to clean it, I’d peruse the studio spaces of the full-time students enrolled there. Most of the time I was just thinking about my drawing or enjoying the background music or conversation. Suddenly I was struck by the realization that these same paintings had been sitting here for months (sometimes years) unfinished! I thought, “Wow! Why on earth can’t they finish these paintings?”.

I remembered the same thing happened in art school. My fellow students would be working on the same grand masterpiece for six months or more, but to tell the truth the painting looked just as it did from the early stages. I think part of this is because of the mystique that a painting is complicated or that it must take a long time to make a beautiful painting for it to be good. Whatever the reason for this strange phenomenon the outcome is eventually that the artist gets stalled.

How could you not? Working on the same painting for a year and still, it’s still left unfinished. In the end, the artist just ended up with their confidence shattered and a lot of the time just quit painting altogether.

I’ve learned that making a beautiful painting doesn’t have to take forever or be super complicated. I’ve also learned that finishing what I start is CRITICAL to my confidence as an artist. Stay tuned because next week I’ll be sharing more on this topic!
