Happy New Year? How to begin again right now.

Do you feel like it’s the new year like me? The new year came and went and I’m wondering if you too felt as if it wasn’t the same as other new years. Usually, I do a New Years’ letting go ritual and goal setting ceremony the first week of January. This year though, I wasn’t feelin’ it.

Do you know what I mean? 

Then all of a sudden over the weekend I felt it! I thought this is the new beginning I’ve been waiting for. Spring is starting to bud, the sun is shining, and I get my vaccine this week. The overwhelming feeling of NEW BEGINNING washed over me like a cleansing wave. 

So I decided that NOW was the perfect time for me to go through my New Year’s ritual. I love this ritual so much and it works for me every time. So I’d like to share with you in case you too are feeling that need to release the old and make way for the NEW. 

Here’s the thing, do this when you feel ready otherwise I don’t think it’s quite as powerful…And do it your own way. The following is the way that works for me: 

I do it before sunrise. Sunrise represents a new beginning to me. I light candles, have some music (or not- sometimes I listen to the birds).

I go back through the last year and I write down EVERY pain, resentment, and hard time that I need to let go of. I sit with this as long as I need to get it all out. 

Then I cut each one out into a strip of paper. Next, I BURN each strip of paper in a metal container sighing relief and saying things like:

“I let you go.”

“I release you.”

“I forgive you.”

“I am done with that.”

“Thank you for teaching me.” 

Once I go through the letting go process, now it’s time for me to capture everything I was grateful for in the last year. taking time to relish and appreciate every good thing that came to me.  I write all of these down as well being thankful for each one. 

Next, I write down my needs. Anything that comes out is fine. I ask myself, What do I really need this year?  This journaling gets me in touch with what I need to give myself and makes me feel grounded and safe. Writing down things like: I need space, quiet, inspiration, joy, comfort, gentleness, nourishment, time to myself. I usually hang this list up in my bathroom to remind myself daily of these basic yet critical needs because I’m the only one who can fill them. 

Next, I write down my wants. I ask myself, What do I really want to happen this year? This is a space to dream and get in touch with any short-term or long-term desires I have. This journaling fills me with hope and excitement for the future. You can also turn this into something visual if you like to. 

After you do this process, nothing can stop you! You’re a fresh clean slate. Ready to come out of the dormancy of the long pandemic winter and bud with new hope and life.
