My instinct is usually to paint rich, moody still lifes with dark backgrounds — but these plums just wouldn’t allow it! Their deep purple hue practically demanded a high-key setting to show off their color and glow. I wanted to keep a classical sensibility, but bring in soft contrast and dramatic lighting in a whole new way. If you love kitchen still lifes or fruit studies with a fresh twist, this painting is a real gem.
