Here’s why I love painting peonies. New peony art fresh off the easel!

Last week I was in peony heaven! I have to say there’s nothing quite like being immersed in beautiful peonies for an entire week. To me it’s always proof of how healing beauty can be. Add on top of that the added healing benefit of creativity as an artist and it really is like you’re living in heaven on earth.  I created three peony paintings last week. Each one individual and special in its own way. I hate to repeat myself in my art and I’m always seeking new ways of looking at the same subject. That’s why each of...Read More
The equation for success with your art is: Courage + Celebration = Confidence

The equation for success with your art is: Courage + Celebration = Confidence

Start today with these two tools you need to work through resistance! Here I am at my 10 year anniversary as a full time artist - yay me - I freaking rock! I often get asked how I have so much confidence.  Looking back over the last ten years, at the struggles, the victories, and progress, it's become clear to me what creates confidence and success.  I’m so excited to share it with you because I believe it’s 100% possible for you too! Nothing makes me happier than seeing you reach your goals and full potential too! Why?  Because that’s...Read More
Here’s My Top 3 most memorable experiences so far as an artist. What’s yours?

Here’s My Top 3 most memorable experiences so far as an artist. What’s yours?

Kelli with diploma 2011 As I mentioned in the last blog, this month marks my 10 year anniversary as a full-time artist! I graduated from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts with a B.F.A. in May 2011! Woohoo! So this month I’m celebrating that. I’m still going strong and loving every minute of being an artist, teacher, and entrepreneur after ten years.  So thank you so much to everyone who has supported me and my work all these years! You’ve made it possible for me to thrive as an artist. You’re so awesome!  Being a self employed artist can come...Read More
I don’t know what I’m doing! Moving forward in the face of uncertainty.

I don’t know what I’m doing! Moving forward in the face of uncertainty.

I don’t know what I’m doing! Have you ever said that?  Me too. Lots.  It’s okay to feel like you don’t know what you’re doing. (even though it feels awful) Okay don’t freak out on me here, but seriously I really don't know what I’m doing and I never have. There’s always some amount of self doubt or confusion. I’ve been thinking about a lot of things lately surrounding our journey as artists, our definition of success, the ups and downs of being an artist, the lows and highs, the growth and the struggles. Why all this contemplation you ask?...Read More
Do you have a vision?

Do you have a vision?

“Without a vision the people shall perish.” - Proverbs 29:18 More importantly, do you have a vision that’s greater than yourself? Artists sometimes come to me with the problem of lacking motivation. Last week I talked about one solution to this problem. That was to know WHO you’re doing it for. In that conversation the example I gave was me creating, teaching, and building my business for my younger 12-year-old self. (You can go back and read that too because it’s powerful.) I find that as compelling as that concept is though, it doesn’t always cut the mustard.  Because self-doubt...Read More
Who are you working for?

Who are you working for?

Let’s talk motivation for a sec.  What motivates you to do what you do?  Knowing WHO are you actually working for is a huge motivator when times get hard. As an artist, the path isn’t always easy. We all get blocked. The inspiration well runs dry. It happens. You can feel angry or depressed (both signs of a blocked artist). You can lose your joy. You can lose your focus. Especially when you start getting lost in the weeds of self-doubt.  Trying to be an artist with self doubt is like you’re trying to swim to the other side of the pool...Read More

Are you inspiration poor? How to open the flood gates of abundance by giving to yourself every day.

Are you inspiration poor? How to open the flood gates of abundance by giving to yourself every day.

How often do you give to yourself? Seriously. Stop and think about it. When’s the last time you gave something to yourself?  Sometimes It doesn’t have to be anything that costs a lot of money either. When’s the last time you gave yourself time alone? A walk in the park, a glass of wine in the garden smelling the flowers, a nap, or a bubble bath.  Other times you will be required to spend money and perhaps even scary money to make way for abundance in your life.  As an artist I’ve learned that creation and inspiration only comes when...Read More
Happy New Year? How to begin again right now.

Happy New Year? How to begin again right now.

Do you feel like it’s the new year like me? The new year came and went and I’m wondering if you too felt as if it wasn’t the same as other new years. Usually, I do a New Years' letting go ritual and goal setting ceremony the first week of January. This year though, I wasn’t feelin’ it. Do you know what I mean?  Then all of a sudden over the weekend I felt it! I thought this is the new beginning I’ve been waiting for. Spring is starting to bud, the sun is shining, and I get my vaccine this...Read More
5 Ways to Loosen Up Your Painting Style

5 Ways to Loosen Up Your Painting Style

How loosey goosey do you want to be?   First, we must understand our own definition of painting loose or tight and how loose we want to paint. I’ve had people say about my work, “I’d love to paint as loose as you.”,  they’ve also said “I could never paint as tight as you.” As you can see, tight and loose, is  really a matter of individual perception. However, I think we can surmise the general difference between tight and loose.   Tight is when the subject looks very realistic or hyper-realistic. It’s when the brushstrokes  are all smoothed out and the edges are...Read More
