New York in the summer is hot, loud, and full of stories—and the Union Square market is no exception. I was completely out of my comfort zone painting this on-site, with people stopping to chat and the noise of the city all around. But this painting is a celebration of that chaos and color. From the striped umbrellas to the piles of produce and swaying trees, I wanted to capture the pulse of it all. I might never attempt this exact feat again, but I’m so glad I did.
