5 Ways to Loosen Up Your Painting Style

5 Ways to Loosen Up Your Painting Style

How loosey goosey do you want to be?   First, we must understand our own definition of painting loose or tight and how loose we want to paint. I’ve had people say about my work, “I’d love to paint as loose as you.”,  they’ve also said “I could never paint as tight as you.” As you can see, tight and loose, is  really a matter of individual perception. However, I think we can surmise the general difference between tight and loose.   Tight is when the subject looks very realistic or hyper-realistic. It’s when the brushstrokes  are all smoothed out and the edges are...Read More
The pros and cons of attending art school. How to avoid the cost and turmoil.

The pros and cons of attending art school. How to avoid the cost and turmoil.

While I appreciate the time I had at art school, it was riddled with problems. #1 was the short-sighted game of the school. I’ve taken online coaching programs that have better ongoing support than art school and they’ve cost me far less. In the end, these programs and coaches know that their customer's results are the most important. They know they need to offer support to their students in a way that will help their long term success. Those students will then sing their praises and refer them to others.  My experience in art school was the total opposite. Teachers...Read More
3 stages of artistic development. Discover my proven prescriptions to breakthrough to mastery.

3 stages of artistic development. Discover my proven prescriptions to breakthrough to mastery.

In a recent meeting with my Mastermind Mentee group, a topic came up about development. I mentioned the three stages of development as an artist: beginner, intermediate, mastery.  White Hydrangeas The students were wondering… How do you know what stage of development you’re at?  Great question! Being at mastery level now, I can look back on my own development and identify the key points of all three stages. It’s so clear to me because a.) It hasn’t been that long ago that I was a beginner thirteen years ago so it’s still fresh in my mind and b.) I work...Read More
Painting Limoges Jar and Nectarines 12” x 16” Oil on Panel

Painting Limoges Jar and Nectarines 12” x 16” Oil on Panel

The Set Up!   The arrangement is a beautiful French Limoges Porcelain Jar, this will be the main event! I paired it with some gorgeous nectarines, grapes and artificial leaves. I decided to go with a blue green background as I thought it would be a nice complement to the reds and pinks in the jar and fruit, but also harmonious to the greens and blues in the foreground as well. I really liked the thought of these dancing spring greens leading you up to the main event. The Start   I toned with burnt umberr working on a beautiful non-absorbent Ampersand Gessoboard.   I mass in...Read More

It’s been my dream to help other artists achieve their goals and improve their painting skills. How Having a Painting Practice Can Save Your Life and Others

How Having a Painting Practice Can Save Your Life and Others

Okay, that’s a little dramatic, but I do believe that having a painting practice can bring a stronger sense of peace, purpose, and control in our lives. I don’t often talk about the political dramas that are occurring in our country here in the United States. But that coupled with the Covid pandemic is exhausting. With strife, rage, and fear abounding it’s enough to make anyone go crazy and derail into anxiety and despair. Even the most balanced among us I’m sure has lost their shit at one point or another.  So many of these things are out of our...Read More
Here’s My Personal 3 Step Process for Setting Courageous New Year’s Goals

Here’s My Personal 3 Step Process for Setting Courageous New Year’s Goals

Lately, there’s been talk of how goals don’t work. How you shouldn’t bother setting goals but instead you should focus on habit building. That without habits goals don’t matter. Ummm okay. I don’t agree with that at all. If you set a goal and you don’t work towards it you won’t achieve it. Duh. Yet, habits without a larger reason or a longer-term goal can become drudgery. Without a bigger vision and emotional drive of a goal habits alone depend on will power. The real power lies in the combination of both deep vision and habits to achieve them.  I’m...Read More
Letting GO for a Fresh Start in 2021

Letting GO for a Fresh Start in 2021

Could we say this was the year of things not going according to plan? Definitely! Wow has it been crazy. This year has sure been difficult and has thrown all of us some major curve balls. We could all say this has been the hardest year we've lived through yet.  It's been full of so many failed plans and disappointments.  Oh those best laid plans!   I’m reminded of the quote by Henry David Thoreau, “Be grateful for every hour, and accept what it brings.”  Gosh that’s hard. Some of us have lost loved ones. Some have suffered great illnesses or...Read More

How I Followed My Bliss Foolishly Amid Risk to Achieve My Art Dreams and Avoided the Bliss Detours Along the Way. What’s Your Next Bliss Choice?

As the new year is approaching I find myself reflecting on this year and the ones before. I find myself preparing for a new year, another year of following my bliss.  There’s a quote by Epictetus that I’ve always loved. It says: “If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.” I’ve made foolish and stupid decisions (by the opinions of others) for 13 years to follow my bliss and do it my way as Sinatra sang. (One of my favorite songs by the way).  I’m not a rebel by any means. I was an A+...Read More

5 interesting reasons why I boldly sell my art. Beware the starving artist’s myth.

Why do I try so hard to sell my own work? Besides the obvious, I need money to pay my bills and not live on ramen noodles. I get this kind of question and criticism often. So today I want to strip it down for you with full transparency. It’s been a bit of a journey myself discovering these truths over the last ten years of my artistic career. Now I’m sharing the inside scoop with you here. I’ve never liked creating in a vacuum.  Recently my mom found an old audiotape of me when I was eleven years old....Read More
